1. Follow-up research on the endangered soft-shelled
turtle Trionyx triunguis which lives in freshwater, marine and brackish
water habitats in the Dalyan delta, Patara and by other southern shores
of Turkey.
2. Continuation of the support for the tracking of green turtles (Chelonia
mydas) by satellite monitoring, carried out by the University of Swansea,
Wales, on the northwestern shores of Cyprus. The aim of the research
is to discover as much as possible about the turtles' habits. Transmitters
will provide detailed information on the turtles' movements, for example
their breeding grounds, feeding grounds, migratory routes and patterns.
This will indicate very clearly which areas need to be protected.
3. Support for a Master thesis, in collaboration with the University
of Bournemouth, U.K., for the study of the sand dunes on Mounda beach,
south Kefalonia, in Greek Ionian waters. The sand dunes border with
the nesting beach of the loggerhead turtle, moreover tourist development
has already started in the area. The study is both environmental (on
the fauna, flora etc.) and on tourist impact. The aim of the study is
to help the Local Authorities in the planning of the protection of this
area.
4. An updated report on the status of the three nesting beaches of the
green turtle Chelonia mydas, on the southern shores of Turkey regarding
the unauthorised tourist development. This is the species most threatened
with extinction in the Mediterranean.
5. Preparation of the updated technical report concerning Zakynthos,
Kefalonia, Akamas in Cyprus and Patara and Dalyan in Turkey, to be used
at the next Bern Convention Meeting, Council of Europe (Strasbourg)
and to put pressure on the Turkish authorities. In this way the protection
of the sea turtles and their nesting beaches is kept in high profile,
by the pressure applied not only on the Contracting Parties to the Convention,
but also at the European Community.
6. Participation at National and International Conferences and Meetings,
with presentation of papers concerning our aims and our work. For 1999,
meetings have already been scheduled to take place in Tunisia, Turkey,
Italy, Crete, Malta and France.
7. Updates on MEDASSET's work and the status of sea turtles in the Mediterranean
to the public and national and international media. Continuation of
the Awareness and Action campaign on a National and International level,
on the detrimental effects of "small garbage" on the marine environment
and printing of informative material.
8. Ongoing support for international campaigns to stop the trade and
exploitation of sea turtles in Egypt, to halt the construction of the
hotel on the important nesting beach at X'cacel in Mexico and collaboration
with WWF India for the campaign against "small garbage" on the islands
of Andaman and Nicobar, in the Bay of Bengal.
9. Continuation of the programme on Environmental Awareness and Education
concerning sea turtles at schools, higher education and Universities,
in collaboration with various National and International Institutes.
10. Further development and updating of the Scientific and Educational
Web site "EuroTurtle" on the Biology and Conservation of Sea Turtles
in the Mediterranean, in collaboration with Exeter University and Kings
College, Taunton in the U.K. "EuroTurtle" receives thousands of visitors
a year.
11. A programme of providing data to students for their theses or other
studies and a volunteer programme, in situ at the offices of MEDASSET
Greece, in collaboration with Universities and other youth organisations,
from Greece and abroad, concerning the protection and study of sea turtles
and their habitats in the Mediterranean, in exchange for voluntary work.
12. Filing and organisation of MEDASSET's significant and rich resource
material referring to MEDASSET activities and other ecological issues,
which will be incorporated into a Mediterranean Resource Centre.
13. The development of activities to raise funds, for example membership
schemes, EC projects, grants, donations and organisation of various
events in order to be able to pursue the work and goals of MEDASSET.
