1. Project research by students from the University
of Derby, U.K., and Cornell University, USA, on "Anthropogenic
Impact on the Natura 2000 Designated Sea Turtle Nesting Beaches of Crete".
2. A follow-up report (2nd year) on the status of
the three important green turtle Chelonia mydas, nesting beaches on
the southern shores of Turkey regarding tourist impact, pollution and
Industrial/commercial development. This is the species most threatened
with extinction in the Mediterranean.
3. Follow-up research (3rd year) on the endangered
soft-shelled brackish water turtle Trionyx triunguis on the southern
shores of Turkey.
4. Presentation of the updated follow-up technical
reports concerning Zakynthos and Crete in Greece, and Patara and Dalyan
in Turkey, Trionyx and Green Turtles, at the next Bern Convention Meeting,
at Council of Europe (Strasbourg).
5. Production of an Educational Kit, "Mediterranean,
An Endangered Sea". Continuation of the programme on Environmental
Awareness and Education in schools, colleges and Universities, in collaboration
with various National and International Institutes.
6. Further development and updating (3rd year) of
the award-winning Scientific and Educational Web site "EuroTurtle"
on the Biology and Conservation of Sea Turtles in the Mediterranean,
in collaboration with Exeter University and Kings College, Taunton in
the U.K. "EuroTurtle" has received over 62,000 thousand visitors
since 1998.
7. Continuation of a programme providing data to
students for their theses or other studies and a volunteer programme,
in situ at the offices of MEDASSET/Greece. In collaboration with Universities
and other youth organisations, from Greece and abroad, in exchange for
voluntary work.
8. Ongoing support for international campaigns to
stop the trade and exploitation of sea turtles in Egypt; collaboration
with RSPCA U.K. for CITES implementation in Greece; a campaign to establish
Patara in Turkey as a World Heritage Site, and action to halt construction
work by the Indian Navy on the nesting beach at Visnakhapatnam in India
9. Continuation (3rd year) of the Awareness and Action
campaign at a National and International level, on the detrimental effects
of "small garbage" on the marine environment and publication
of a sea turtle information leaflet and other material.
10. Participation at several National and International
Conferences and Meetings, with presentation of papers concerning MEDASSET
research and work. Meetings have been scheduled to take place in USA,
France, Libya, Egypt, etc.
11. Continuation of filing and organisation of MEDASSETs
significant resource material referring to sea turtle conservation activities
and other ecological issues, into a Mediterranean Resource Centre.
12. The development of activities to raise funds, for example membership schemes, EC projects, grants, donations and organisation of various events.
