THE MEDASSET ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION KIT – ![]() Arabic version of 'The Mediterranean Sea A Source of Life' Following the great success of the Greek and English versions of our Environmental Education Kit "The Mediterranean Sea, a Source of Life" in 2003, it has now been adapted, translated and reproduced in Arabic and is ready for free dissemination to schools in countries around the Mediterranean. This has been made possible through collaboration with the Hellenic Children's Museum and Kaleidoscope Publications and generous donations from the Stavros S. Niarchos Foundation, UNEP/MAP, RAC/SPA (UNEP/MAP), and the Prince of Wales Foundation (UK). The original Greek and English versions of the Kit were produced in 2003 in association with the Hellenic Children's Museum and Kaleidoscope Publications, funded by the Stavros S. Niarchos Foundation, and has already been disseminated free of charge to thousands of schools in Greece and other countries around the Mediterranean and the World. This 50-page publication is an invaluable tool for teachers and educational group leaders, which aims to engage 6-12 year old children from all over the Mediterranean region in creative activities, instilling knowledge, environmental values and a sense of regional identity and responsibility. It contains a colourful illustrated map of the Mediterranean Sea, six Fact Sheets, Activity Sheets (for two age groups), Guidelines for Educators, and a Bibliography for further reading. Our aim is to produce the Kit in other Mediterranean languages, funds permitting. To find out more about the kit or view a sample in Arabic, Greek or English, please visit our website at: http://www.medasset.org/kit/default.htm 'A REVIEW AND REAPPRAISAL OF RESEARCH IN SOME PREVIOUSLY UNSURVEYED MEDITERRANEAN MARINE TURTLE NESTING SITES, 1990-2001' by Venizelos, L., K. Papapavlou, M.-A. Dunais & C. Lagonika, has been published in the Belgian Journal of Zoology as part of the Proceedings of the 19th International Congress on the Zoogeography and Ecology of Greece and Adjacent Regions. 135(2):pp. 271-277 and is now available on our website at: http://www.medasset.org/PDF/Thessaloniki-2002.pdf Abstract: One of MEDASSET's main objectives has been the assessment of coastal areas on a pan-Mediterranean scale in a search for potential nesting sites of Caretta caretta (loggerhead turtle) and Chelonia mydas (green turtle), the only two marine turtle species known to reproduce in the Mediterranean. The specific characteristics of each coastal region were logged, as turtles cannot be successfully protected unless all their reproductive habitats are known. If any important turtle nesting sites were found, recommendations for implementation of protective measures were made to the States involved, followed by efforts towards the implementation of protective legislation and conservation measures. These surveys took place in Sardinia, Italy (1990 & 1991), the North Aegean (mainland and islands), Greece (1991), the western part of the Egyptian Mediterranean coast (1993), Syria (1991), Libya (1995 & 1998) and Lebanon (2001). This review sums up data resulting from these pioneering studies and re-evaluates it in the light of more recent information regarding marine turtle nesting and conservation in the Mediterranean. |
