“Niretta the Caretta” aims to raise awareness about the endangered sea turtle species, their habitats, and the negative impact humans can have on the environment, by promoting actions that can be employed by each and every one of us in order to mitigate or minimise human impact.
In May 2008, ‘Niretta the Caretta’ received the 8th Mediterranean Honorific Award, granted by MEDITERRANEA CIE and MIO ECSDE to an awareness raising project that relates to the environment and sustainable development. The selection criteria used were viability, originality, planning and social interest of the project.
To capture the imagination of young and old alike, we joined forces with talented costume designer Inbal Gildin to create our mascot. Niretta is the centerpiece of our programme and was funded by the Greek Animal Welfare Fund.
This programme aims to give a new face to sea turtle conservation in Greece with the use of a creative and innovative approach. Niretta’s ‘larger than life’ charisma effectively conveys environmental education messages in its immediacy and appeal. Programme includes a broad range of activities including interactive workshops at schools, visits to children’s hospitals, and appearances at local festivals and public events.
